The University of Iowa and the Iowa Hawkeye Football team is honoring September 11th by endorsing a grass roots effort to support our soldiers deploying to Afghanistan. There will be a coat drive on game day organized by ELKS Club #590 of Iowa City. The coats collected that day will be shipped to members of the Iowa Army National Guard deployed to Afghanistan this fall. These brave Iowa soldiers will in turn distribute them in the remote villages of Afghanistan this winter when it's very cold.
Soldiers returning from Afghanistan have told us that giving comfort items like coats gives our troops an opportunity to make a connection with the Afghan people. This in turn builds good will the Afghans and they are less likely to support the Taliban in their efforts against American soldiers.
We are asking for new or gently used adult and youth coats, hats, and mittens. You will find our drop-off site located on the south side of Kinnick Stadium at the Krause Family Plaza. Look for a white Elks Club Trailer with a Rapport Afghanistan banner on the side. We will be collecting coats from 8:00AM until kick-off at 2:36PM.
Coats, hats and mittens may be dropped off anytime at the Elks Club lodge (637 Foster Road in Iowa City) at any time from now until the end of October.
