Big Brothers Big Sisters Of Metro Milwaukee
Last updated on December 30, 2013

The Big Brothers Big Sisters mission is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported, one-to-one mentoring relationships that change their lives for the better, forever.

Did you know that you can change a life for the better, forever? If you have a couple hours a week, you can! With hundreds of children ages 6 to 15 who face adversity on our waiting list in Milwaukee and Waukesha counties, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Milwaukee is actively seeking new volunteers. Our professional, trained staff will be with you every step of the way and you can choose from our School-based Mentoring Program, where volunteers and children meet at one of our partner school sites, or our Community-based Mentoring Program, where you plan activities in the community and spend time together around town. College students, young professionals, retirees, couples and many other adults make great mentors!

Basic Program Requirements:
All volunteers must go through a thorough screening process which includes a formal application, layered criminal background screening, references checks and an in-person interview. We ask for a minimum two-year relationship and the availability to meet with the child on a weekly basis. For our school-based program, all volunteers must be 18 years or older and out of high school. For our community-based program, all volunteers must be 21 years or older.

Mentoring Options:
Our one-to-one mentoring programs help meet the growing needs of parents and guardians seeking assistance and support in providing better futures for their children. Through both community and school-based mentoring options, we have the power to change lives for the better, forever – one child at a time. Big Brothers Big Sisters carefully screens adult volunteers (Bigs), and matches them with youth (Littles) ages 6 to 15, who are often from low-income, single-parent homes. Because we have so many boys on our waiting list, we created opportunities for boys under the age of 12 to be matched with an adult female volunteer. We also offer couple’s matches, where a couple may mentor a boy together. These options allow us to serve more boys and reduce the child waiting list.

For more than 35 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Milwaukee has operated under the belief that inherent in every child is the ability to succeed and thrive in life. As part of the nation's largest donor- and volunteer-supported mentoring network, we make and support meaningful, monitored matches between adult volunteers (Bigs) and children (Littles), ages 6-18, in Milwaukee and Waukesha counties. We develop positive relationships that have a direct and lasting effect on the lives of young people in our community.
