LITA "Love Is The Answer" of Contra Costa was founded as non-profit organization in 1980 and has operated since then as a public charity, serving senior and disabled individuals living full time in over 40 Contra Costa County hospitals and nursing homes. An annual average of over 100 LITA volunteers visit isolated and lonely seniors living in hospitals regularly bringing social enjoyment of various kinds. Pet visitors may call on both individuals and small groups gathered in wheel chairs in a social area. Pet visitor volunteers visit assisted living retirement homes as well as some skilled nursing facilities.

The staggering statistic is that over half this population has no visitors coming to visit them on any regular basis. LITA is non-sectarian and there is no charge for LITA volunteer's services.

PET VISITORS: Seeking those able and willing to bring a gentle pet to a nursing home to visit those who enjoy and miss the comfort of a pet.
LITA will set up your first trip to the convalescent hospital to meet the activity director to whom you will bring a copy of your shot/ vet records. After orientation LITA of CC will help you meet people in the facility and remain a valuable source of information and dialog after you start to help you sustain your efforts as a volunteer.
REGULAR SCHEDULE: You and the Activity Director decide on your regular Visit schedule (once a week, once every other week or even once a month) to see residents who enjoy the kind of a pet you are planning to bring. Some people love dogs AND cats, some are “dog people” and others may only like cats. You may have something a bit more exotic like a pet parrot or a bunny, in which case you will consult with the activity director about who would most enjoy a close up encounter and a chance to see and talk with you about your pet.

Patients will welcome you as a Pet Visitor with "Love Is The Answer"!

Volunteer Application: Complete the simple one page info and application form which you may email to info@litaofcontracosta.org or to LITA Director Victoria Ryan at victoriaryan@sbcglobal.net or snail mail to LITA of CC, PO Box 121, Port Costa, CA 94569-0121 Request an email app from Victoria Ryan or Call 925 212-4573 to ask for an application to be emailed or mailed to your home or business address. LITA Director will provide support and help set up the orientation visit at any hospital, nursing home or assisted living residence in Contra Costa County. Some Alameda County placements are done but it is out of our stated service area and a stretch of our resources as LITA does its best to respond to needs in Contra Costa County.
