Loved Twice

The mission of Loved Twice is to supply free baby clothes to underprivileged newborns in their first year of life. Loved Twice has delivered over 31,000 pounds of clothing (an estimated $700,000 value) to more than 4,000 newborns in the Bay Area. Considering a newborn onesie weighs just over one ounce, this significant volume has been saved from landfills and recycled back to our community's highest need families. Keeping babies warm in gently used clothing and recycling these items accomplishes two considerable purposes.

Each baby receives a box of 75 items, including newborn clothes, coats, blankets, shoes, books (to promote early childhood literature), and a small safe toy. The items are sorted, folded, and lovingly packed by Loved Twice volunteers, and delivered to hospitals, shelters and safe homes where babies and their mothers benefit directly.

The baby clothing is donated by members of the community, who leave items in Loved Twice collection bins throughout the Bay Area. Loved Twice is proud of our "green" approach, circulating items which can be recycled/reused, keeping them from landfills. The items donated are sorted by gender, placed in boxes and distributed by case managers at local hospitals, shelters, prenatal clinics and safe homes. The new mothers and their newborns who receive boxes are in desperate need, due to several circumstances (homelessness, minimal financial support or minimal family support). Loved Twice focuses on areas with under-served populations and new mothers with limited economic and family support. We rely on generous community members who give of their money, time and talent to sustain and grow our services in the community. There is much more need than we can currently meet. View our opportunities to see how you can help Loved Twice clothe even more babies in need.

The idea for Loved Twice began in September 2005 when the founder and Executive Director, collected donations of baby clothing, diapers, and other baby supplies from her friends and neighbors and sent them to a church in Louisiana to help families displaced by Hurricane Katrina. This experience deeply touched and influenced her to consider how she might be able to help disadvantaged new mothers care for their babies right here in her community. Current collection bins are located in Oakland, Lafayette, San Ramon and San Rafael. The project has now grown to include deliveries at 30 local hospitals, prenatal clinics, shelters, safe homes and schools in under-served locations.
