Lafayette Transitional Housing Center, Inc. is a non-profit organization which began in 1989 to provide shelter and services to the homeless so they may secure independent employment and permanent housing.
Services and Programs
LTHC is comprised of four separate programs. Two of the programs are transitional housing, for homeless families with children and single men and women, respectively. The third program is the Supportive Services Program which offers services to anyone in our community who is homeless or at-risk of homelessness. The fourth program is the Lincoln Center Permanent Supportive Housing Program which provides 24 units of supportive housing to individuals with substantial long-term issues limiting their ability to attain self-sufficiency. The goal of all LTHC programs is to help the homeless learn the necessary skills and overcome their unique obstacles, so that they may successfully maintain housing and not return to homelessness.
Supportive Services Program ~ established in 1997
The Supportive Services Program offers a variety of services to anyone in our community who is homeless or in a housing crisis and wishes to change their situation. We offer a variety of supportive services on-site, including: case management, phone/mail services, shower and laundry facilities, day sleep room, meal preparation (breakfast, lunch and dinner), gas vouchers and bus tokens, client choice food pantry, clothing room, and other needed services.
Family Transitional Housing Program ~ established in 1989
The Family Program offers both housing and case management to up to 13 families in at one of our five properties. The goal of the program is to help homeless families break down the barriers that have led to their homelessness. The Family Program has 1.5 FTE Case Managers who work with each client and are available 24/7. The case managers comprehensively assess each family’s circumstances and coordinates referrals to appropriate services. They assist in the development and implementation of both short and long-term goals, and provide the family with overall support.
Singles Transitional Housing Program ~ established in 1999
The Singles Program offers housing and case management to 15 men and 8 women. The goal of the Singles Program is exactly the same as that of the Family Program. The LTHC Singles Program has 1.5 FTE Case Managers who work with clients, offering the same type of supportive services available to participants of our Family program.
Lincoln Center Permanent Supportive Housing Program ~ established in 2011
The Lincoln Center offers permanent supportive housing to 24 men and women. The goal of the program is to ensure those who have disabilities or other substantial barriers are able to continue residency in their own apartment. The on-site case manager assists each tenant on their short and long-term goals.
Lafayette Transitional Housing Center, Inc. was conceived in 1989 after the need for long-term shelter for homeless families was determined by a survey of area business, churches and news media. Seed monies from were obtained via grants from United Way Venture Grant, Gannett Foundation, Eli Lilly Foundation and Church and Community Projects and were utilized to begin this agency. Over the next 7 years, LTHC acquired five properties for the Family Program.
In 1997, LTHC partnered with Lafayette Neighborhood Housing Services, Inc. to purchase the Lincoln Center building and renovate it to serve the homeless. LTHC moved from the facility in 2007, and we began a major renovation of the facility was begun in 2010. The Lincoln Center renovation was in March 2011 and is now the Lincoln Center Permanent Supportive Housing Project.
In 1999, LTHC purchased a former nursing home located at 312 North 8th Street. The property was home to our administrative offices and allowed us to expand service and develop the LTHC Singles Program. In May 2007, the administrative offices and the Supportive Services Program were re-located to our newly designed and donated space at the Howarth Center.
