Shady Hollow Assisted Riding
Last updated on November 2, 2016

Shady Hollow Assisted Riding provides a supportive equine environment where individuals with physical, cognitive and/or emotional disabilities can experience social and educational rewards. Volunteers are needed on a continuous basis to make the lesson the most effective and fun for the rider. Volunteers must be age 14 and older. Adults/entire families encouraged!

Shady Hollow Assisted Riding (SHAR) provides an equine program where individuals of all ages, disabilities and conditions can utilize therapeutic riding and other equine activities to improve flexibility, balance and muscle strength. Individuals with mental or emotional disabilities can form unique relationships with the horses that lead to increased confidence, patience and self-esteem. Being on horseback also provides a sense of independence for the rider. It takes approx. 6 volunteers per rider to effectively hold a lesson. We need volunteers as a horse leader, the person who retains control of the horse during a lesson; a side-walker, a person who assists the rider during the lesson; and a spotter, who will assist the group of volunteers and/or rider during the lesson. Volunteers also assist in the barn as groomers, this is a person who helps clean the horse and put on the proper riding equipment, and a helper, these individuals help with many day to day tasks in the barn such as sweeping, haying and cleaning.

Our program has been in operation since 1997 and was incorporated in 1998.
