Be a Mentor to a Child

Be a Mentor to a Child

Project Name: Be a Mentor to a Child
Primary Contact: Sally Miller, Operations Specialist, (319) 377-8993 ext. 100, (email)
Primary Address: Address is to be decided
Description:

Our goal is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever. We do this through community and site-based mentoring.

We have a need for veterans that would be interested in being a Big for a Little that has parents on active-duty. Sometimes a single parent or grandparents are raising kids when a parent is actively serving in the military. Hopefully a veteran can help serve as a role model by being a Big.

The community-based program is the traditional Big Brothers Big Sisters friendship, where Bigs and Littles get together on their own and share fun activities they both enjoy! It doesn't require a special occasion or expensive activities; just four hours a month for one year to share simple things they already like to do such as shooting hoops, playing a board game, sharing a pizza, taking a walk at the park or just hanging out.

All volunteers and children are fully screened, assessed and supported to ensure the safety of our program participants. Matching is based on preferences and interests.

Vision-Mentoring children for a brighter future

Mission-Big Brothers Big Sisters is a professional mentoring organization passionately committed to enhancing children's lives through life-changing relationships that impact our children and community.

Description:
Our Mentoring Programs Work!
National research has shown that positive relationships between youth and their Big Brothers and Big Sisters mentors have a direct and measurable impact on children's lives. By participating in our youth mentoring programs, Little Brothers and Sisters are:
*More confident in their schoolwork performance
*Able to get along better with their families
*46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs
*27% less likely to begin using alcohol
*52% less likely to skip school

In our Community Based Program volunteer "Bigs" share activities with a child that they both enjoy... fishing, playing board games, cooking, going to the movies, or playing catch. We ask volunteers for a one year commitment and a minimum of 4 hours a month. Couples and families can all participate together!

Lunch Buddy volunteers visit an elementary aged child at school once a week or every other week over lunch. They eat together, read books, play at recess or work on homework.

History:
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cedar Rapids and East Central Iowa started as a Big Brothers agency in 1975, adding Big Sisters in the mid-1980's. Throughout our history, our mission has remained steadfast-to help boys and girls achieve their full potential through one-to-one mentoring relationships with carefully screened and caring adults.

Nationally, Big Brothers Big Sisters is the oldest, largest and most effective youth mentoring organization in the United States. We have been the leader in one-to-one youth service for more than a century, developing positive relationships that have a direct and lasting impact on the lives of young people. Big Brothers Big Sisters mentors children, ages 6 through 18, in communities across the country.
