Volunteer Centers transform people and neighborhoods by building the capacity of the community to tap its own resources to respond to and solve its greatest challenges. Our mission is a dual one: to strengthen the nonprofit sector's ability to utilize volunteers effectively and to help individuals achieve personal and professional growth through service to others throughout their lifetimes.
Since 1946, The Volunteer Center Serving San Francisco and San Mateo Counties has been more than a clearinghouse of information in guiding volunteers to where there is need. The Volunteer Center trains and mentors organizations to add value in utilizing volunteers. We are integral to San Francisco's safety net of services because we help nonprofits maintain and expand their capacity to recruit and manage volunteers successfully, so that they can focus on providing vital services.
Annually, more than 20,000 volunteers find opportunities to serve at over 1,600 nonprofits through The Volunteer Center's programs. Special programs designed to engage varied volunteer populations -- including corporate employees, people with disabilities and youth -- are standouts among The Volunteer Center's services. We seek to understand what motivates individuals to serve, equip them with information, manage their expectations and inspire their action.
