Veteran's Day — Flags Placed on Graves of Vets, Nov 11, 2017 Student Service Learning (SSL) Approved

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on November 30, 2016

Volunteers will meet at Chapel (on the grounds) at 10:00 a.m. to be given instructions, map and flags regarding placement of flags on grave sites of our military veterans. We have 300+ veterans buried at Monocacy Cemetery from several war eras: Revolutionary War, Civil War, Spanish-American, World Wars I & II, Korea, Vietnam and more. We try to gather groups of at least 3 volunteers per section: 1 would read map and give instruction to find grave locations; 2 would carry groups of flags, find actual grave site and place as per instructed on the site. There may be 3 different flags that need to be placed on appropriate grave (i.e. Revolutionary flag, Civil War flag, United States flag). We have had Scout groups (Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts) as well as general volunteers. We estimate 2 working hours for this event. The placing of flags will always be the Saturday BEFORE the Holiday (Memorial Day & Veterans Day) to PLACE the flags and the Saturday AFTER the Holiday to COLLECT the flags. You may sign up for just one of the Place/Collect Flag days per Holiday, but we would appreciate if you sign up for Place AND Collect Flags for the Holiday you choose.

All ages welcome, from 6th grade up. Hilly, rough ground must be traversed. Dress appropriately for weather of the day. We will place and collect flags come rain or shine. Reading, writing and map reading skills are used within each group. Writing is used to mark whether or not flag has been placed.
