Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on July 14, 2015

Teach an adult in your community to read or speak English through LVM!

Literacy Volunteers of Massachusetts (LVM) is a nonprofit that trains volunteer tutors to work with adult students who want to improve their basic reading, writing, or English speaking skills.

Volunteers work one-on-one with a student in either basic literacy or ESOL. Tutors and students receive ongoing support from LVM's staff, including training sessions, newsletters, professional development opportunities, special recognition events, a reference and lending library, and regular personal assistance.

To see more of what we do, check out www.lvm.org, or www.facebook.com/LVofMA.

Educational requirements: volunteers are required to have a high school diploma or its equivalent.

Training requirements: volunteers are required to attend a volunteer orientation (2 hours) and successfully complete a tutor training in either basic literacy or ESOL (18 hours).

Please note that prior teaching experience or knowledge of a foreign language are not required.

Upcoming orientations on the evenings of July 29 (Wednesday), August 10 (Monday), and August 25 (Tuesday). For more information or to register for an orientation, please contact Grace, LVM-Boston Coordinator.

Personal requirements: volunteers should be able to create a flexible, responsive, non-threatening and respectful learning experience, have an ability to work with diverse groups and possess a sensitivity to the struggles of adult learners, especially those with limited literacy and English language skills. Patience and sense of humor are also important.
