Global Youth Service Day, April 20-22, 2012 is an annual campaign that celebrates and mobilizes the millions of children and youth who improve their communities each day of the year through service and service-learning. Established in 1988, Global Youth Service Day is the largest and longest-running service event in the world, and the only day of service dedicated to children and youth. GYSD is celebrated each year in over 100 countries.
Each year, millions of children and youth around the world work together with schools, youth organizations, nonprofits, community and faith-based organizations, volunteer and national service programs, government agencies, faith communities, and other individuals to address the world's most critical issues and change their communities on Global Youth Service Day. Global Youth Service Day is a unique opportunity for youth because its emphasis on incorporating "youth voice" into each phase of project planning and execution. Global Youth Service Day has partnered with numerous other organizations nationwide to include other days of service as part of Global Youth Service Day, including National Volunteer Week and Earth Day, in order to maximize youth service opportunities.
The Iowa Commission on Volunteer Service is currently serving its third year as the lead Agency for Global Youth Service Day in Iowa and has forged strong partnerships with numerous youth serving organizations, local volunteer centers, national service programs, K-12 schools, and colleges and universities to promote youth service statewide. This year, our partners have engaged youth aged 5-25 in numerous projects to meet community needs, including environmental projects, fundraising and donation drives for local food banks and homeless shelters, and health promotion.
