This year the Kate Mitchell School Garden was started as a collaborative effort made by VCSC, United Ames, Prairie Rivers of Iowa RC&D, and the Ames School District. The goal was to both feed youth healthy food and teach them how to produce healthy food while performing meaningful service. So far all of the over 300 students of Kate Mitchell, which has a free reduced lunch rate of 47%, have learned firsthand how to compost, set up a garden, and plant seeds. Each student has helped build the garden by mulching pathways, filling raised planters, and planting. In the next year they will use the garden to learn math, science, social studies, and English along with healthy food practices. Parents, community members and sponsors have helped make the Kate Mitchell Garden a success. Wheatsfield Coop, R&C Landscapes, ISU Compost Facility, HandsOn Network, and the City of Ames have all made contributions of resources, funds, and volunteers.
