Shepherd's Clinic provides quality integrative health care to those who are medically uninsured, helping people who are unable to afford commercial health insurance and who do not qualify for government assistance.
ORIGINSThis remarkable place has its origins in the efforts of Seventh Baptist Church to meet the needs of its neighborhood. Members of the church were aware that many people were going to Union Memorial Hospital’s emergency room when their real need was for regular medical attention. Dr. William H. M. Finney, retired neurosurgeon and chief of staff convinced the Hospital and many of its physicians to support a “free” clinic. In Fall of 1991, in the converted basement of a brownstone house owned by the church, the clinic opened. Five years later, Shepherd’s Clinic, moved down the street into the Heritage Building of Seventh Baptist church, with six new exam rooms. Word spread, and patients arrived from throughout the city and surrounding areas. In 2001, Union Memorial Hospital asked the clinic to limit its referrals to the 13 zip code areas closest to the hospital, and nearly 1000 patients were referred to primary care providers closer to their residence. Dr. Finney continued to help the clinic; on the morning of his untimely death, in July 2003, he had visited doctors’ offices to collect donated medicine and delivered it to the clinic. While at the clinic, he talked with a pre-med student volunteer about the advantages of liberal arts education. His legacy is commemorated with a plaque in the entryway at the clinic.
