Lunch Buddies - Mentoring over a school lunch

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on February 21, 2014

This is a school-based mentoring program in which volunteer Big Brothers and Sisters are matched with elementary school-aged children. They meet over lunch once per week and may choose an activity from a box of games, puzzles and worksheets, or they may simply talk.

Ted Dowdell has been a lunch buddy to his little brother, Larry, for four years, riding an electric scooter or three-wheeled tricycle to Larry's school to visit him during lunch once a week. Ted's granddaughter, Heather saw that this journey was becoming difficult for her grandfather and out of respect for the important bond he has with Larry, she began giving Ted rides to Larry's school to make it easier. After seeing them together, she became inspired and started mentoring as well. What started out of respect and admiration for her grandfather's volunteerism has become a meaningful, rewarding experience for the whole family.

Volunteers must be in high school or older. There is no upper age limit. Orientation, interview and training are required. Background, driving and reference checks will be conducted.
