Help an international newcomer improve their English through informal conversation

This is a unique opportunity to meet one-on-one with an international newcomer and help make a difference in their life. With improved reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills, international newcomers can more effectively perform their adult role within their family, career and community. Volunteers with ESL certification and experience a plus!

Activities as an English conversation buddy include:
Meet one-on-one to work on basic language skills through conversation practice
Attend social events together and encourage conversation to increase confidence in speaking
Read a book together to discuss in English
Language exchange – take turns speaking in English and in your partners native language

Time Commitments

-Attend a volunteer orientation at Global Cleveland

-Ongoing and as needed – you will be contacted when a newcomer or special event that best matches your interest and background is in need of assistance

-Meeting times are flexible – individuals decide what works best, usually at least one face-to-face meeting

-Interactions involve email, phone, and face to face correspondence

Requirements:

-Professional and timely communication

-Good listening skills

-Good communication skills, ability to explain things in a friendly and clear manner

-Patience, ability to work through language barriers and accents

-Willingness to share personal and professional experience

-Sense of humor

-Excellent customer service skills

-Able to provide constructive guidance and feedback

-Desire to be helpful

-Must be at least 21 years old

Directions:

 We are located at 200 Public Square (on Euclid Avenue, across the street from the House of Blues). Street parking downtown is free on the weekends, and free one to two hour street parking is available during the week - unless there is a special event. Taking public transportation is recommended! We are located on Euclid Avenue with direct convenient access to the RTA Healthline, the free with a smile downtown trolly, and a 5 minute walk from Tower City Rapid Station.
