Help Change a Life: Become an Adult Literacy Tutor Education Hands On Literacy

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on February 23, 2015

Every day you use your literacy skills to figure out sales prices, check your email, make dinner from a recipe, handle your money, and follow instructions on a medicine bottle. But what if you didn’t have the basic reading and math skills required to navigate these daily tasks?

The staggering truth is that 66% of adults in Cleveland are functionally illiterate, and you can help them improve their lives by volunteering with Seeds of Literacy as an adult literacy tutor. Seeds of Literacy is a nonprofit organization that offers free GED preparation and basic education to adults in the Cleveland area. As the only adult education program in Cuyahoga County that registers new students every week, we always have a need for new and enthusiastic tutors.

The donation of your time, skills, and patience as a tutor can make the crucial difference to an adult learner right in our community. Tutors work one-to-one with students to improve reading, writing, and math skills, offer encouragement and support, and help students develop positive attitudes towards learning. We ask that tutors can commit to attending one class session per week for one year. Classes are two hours long, and we offer a flexible class schedule with sessions scheduled throughout the day to accommodate personal preference and availability.

Our next tutor training will be held:
Saturday, March 21st, 2015, from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m.

If you’re ready to make a difference in your community by changing one life at a time, please contact Alexandria Marshall at 216.661.7950 or alexandriamarshall@seedsofliteracy.org.

We have two locations to serve our community:

West Side -
3104 W. 25th Street, 3rd Floor
(corner of W. 25th & Clark Ave.)
Cleveland, OH 44109

East Side -
13815 Kinsman Road
(corner of Kinsman & E. 139th)
Cleveland, OH 44120

Listen to a few of our graduates speak for themselves about Seeds of Literacy! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fe3Ieq61HeI

Our tutors have good reading and writing skills, patience, promptness, the ability to relate well to a variety of people, and a sense of humor.

All tutors are required to attend one training session, followed by a class observation. Once those are completed we ask that tutors commit to attending at least one class session per week for at least one year. Class sessions are two hours long and are scheduled throughout the day to accommodate personal preference.

Note: Volunteering as a tutor is an ONGOING opportunity. The dates listed below are for the tutor trainings, which are held at certain days and times.
