Stop Child Abuse Now (SCAN) of Northern Virginia
Last updated on July 8, 2015

Stop Child Abuse Now (SCAN) of Northern Virginia is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the well-being of children, the improvement of parent-child relations and the prevention of child abuse and neglect by educating the community about the scope, nature and consequences of child abuse and neglect and the importance of positive, nurturing parenting, providing direct parent education, and advocating for children in the community, the legislature and the courts.

SCAN trains volunteers to be Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) to advocate on behalf of children in the juvenile court system. CASA volunteers are the child's voice in court and help ensure a child's right to a safe, permanent home. A CASA volunteer finds out as much as possible about that child and then recommends to the judge what is in the best interest for the child's future. SCAN's CASA volunteers have advocated for more than 1,500 children since the start of the program in 1988. The CASA Program is particularly looking for bilingual Hispanic and African-American volunteers to advocate on behalf of Hispanic and African-American children.

SCAN also trains volunteers to work with parents and children to prevent child abuse and neglect in our community. Volunteer opportunities are regularly available for Parent and Child group facilitators, Childcare workers, and Workshop presenters.

SCAN of Northern Virginia was founded in 1988 and reaches the Northern Virginia communities of Alexandria City, Arlington County, Fairfax County, Loudoun County and Prince William County. SCAN's programs include Parent Education, Public Education and the Alexandria/Arlington Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Program.

SCAN of Northern Virginia is affiliated with Prevent Child Abuse Virginia, Prevent Child Abuse America and the National Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Association.
