Bikes For The World
Last updated on May 3, 2016

We assist poor people overseas to become more productive through providing affordable bicycles for personal transport to work, school, and health services. Secondarily, we provide satisfying community service opportunities to Americans--collecting bikes and spare parts--towards realizing this primary goal of helping others overseas.

We are the nation's largest bicycle reuse program. We empower individuals, communities and service organizations overseas through acting as a clearinghouse for the collection and distribution thousands of bicycles collecting dust or otherwise being under-utilized. To accomplish this, we provide tangible, rewarding community service opportunities, where individuals can work with others and learn about bicycles in an un-pressured, enjoyable atmosphere; better appreciate the benefits of bicycles; contribute to helping others; and contribute to protecting our local and global environment.

Bikes for the World began in 2005 as a sponsored project of the Washington Area Bicyclist Association, the Metro region's leading bicycle advocacy organization. It was started by Arlington resident Keith Oberg. In 2011, it became an independent IRS 501 (c) (3) charity and is now the nation's leading bicycle reuse organization, collecting and donating more than 13,000 bicycles annually. In 2014, it expects to donate its 100,000th bicycle. It represents a "win-win-win" for all participants, providing an attractive option for owners of no-longer-satisfying bicycles (and opening the way for many donors to acquire a better bicycle that they will actually use), satisfying community service and social opportunities, helping people in receiving countries (and locally in DC) improve their lives through their own efforts, strengthening non-profit community partners, and promoting cycling worldwide. Bikes for the World as of 2013 works with more than 100 schools, scout troops, faith communities, and other community service organizations, public agencies, and local and national businesses, including Dick's Sporting Goods and more than 20 local and regional bicycle retailers.
