Meals on Wheels volunteers deliver prepared meals and a cheerful word to any homebound individual in Arlington who is confined and unable to secure food due to age, illness or other distress.

Meals on Wheels volunteers deliver prepared meals and a cheerful word to any homebound individual in Arlington who is confined and unable to secure food due to age, illness or other distress.

Clients of Meals on Wheels (MOW) vary in age, race, sex and their ability to pay for MOW service. They are usually homebound due to a long term handicap or because of short term convalescence. Clients with sufficient income pay the amount that their food costs MOW. Clients with limited income pay according to their means; MOW arranges a subsidy to meet the cost of the food. The ability to pay has no bearing on a person's eligibility for service.

Meals are delivered to each client between 11am and 1pm Monday through Friday. A delivery consists of a hot noon dinner and a sandwich for supper; both meals are accompanied by salad, bread, beverage and dessert.

MOW is governed and operated almost exclusively by volunteers. A board of directors and its officers oversee the affairs of MOW. Other volunteers discharge the numerous tasks that are essential to the operation of the organization.

The daily (Monday through Friday) delivery process begins at a commercial kitchen that prepares and packages a hot meal and a cold meal for each client. The prepared meals are packed into thermal containers and trucked to the First Presbyterian Church (Ballston area), arriving about 11:00 AM. Volunteer drivers meet the truck at the church and transfer the containers into their private vehicles. There are about fifteen routes that fan across the County, each serving 8 to 12 clients.

MOW is always in need of drivers.

In general, the volunteers complete their deliveries and return the empty containers to First Presbyterian Church between 12:30 and 1:00 PM.
While there is always a need for a variety of volunteers, the greatest need is for drivers; their function is indispensable to the continuing success of MOW.

Meals on Wheels of Northern Virginia, Inc. (MOW) made its initial delivery on January 4, 1971 to three clients. Following years' of growth, MOW incorporated in Virginia in February 1984 "…for charitable purposes, namely, carry on the business of providing meals to homebound individuals who, due to age, illness, or other distress, are confined and unable or willing to secure sustenance themselves…" In July 1984, MOW became exempt from Federal Income Tax under Section 501(c)(3). MOW is not affiliated with a parent organization or an umbrella fund-raising endeavor. MOW serves only Arlington County residents. (Residents in surrounding jurisdictions are served by other organizations. )
