Call for VOLUNTEERS to participate in SPECIALIZED DISASTER TRAINING AND RECOVERY WORK for Winter 2006 Hawaii Flood Recovery

What is this all about? Volunteers are needed to bring help to the hundreds of island families affected by the winter 2006 Hawaii flood.  The federal disaster proclamation opened the door to bring assistance to those who had losses.

Who will provide this specialized disaster training?  Trainers from the Michigan headquarters of The Christian Reformed World Relief Committee (CRWRC) will come to Hawaii to train and oversee this process.  They are the nation’s leader in disaster needs assessment.

Once I’m trained, what will I do? The process involves going door to door in disaster-affected communities to inventory unmet needs, and provide a database of these needs to a community organization.

Who is eligible for this opportunity? Certain qualities are required.  These include emotional maturity and sensitivity, ability to keep confidentiality, and ability to communicate with local families. You will work in a team typically consisting of 1 woman and 1 man. You will need a car.

What is the time commitment?  For 2 weeks – during the hours that people can typically be found at home (weekday evenings and Saturdays). Training will be for several hours on or near Wednesday, May 31st and the 2-week commitment will follow immediately thereafter.

Where will I be assigned?  Oahu teams will conduct assessments in windward and mauka communities that were flooded.  Kauai teams will cover that island.  You will also be added to a Hawaii database of “trained” individuals for future disasters.

How do I get started? Call or email Judith Cantil at Aloha United Way’s Volunteer Hawaii (543-2214 or judith@auw.org) no later than Friday, May 19th.  Or visit an online listing at Volunteer Hawaii
