The Family and Individual Self-Sufficiency Program (FISSP), which initially operated under Aloha United Way, is the only Statewide coordinated effort that recruits for, supports, and works with organization partners and community volunteers to provide free tax assistance services to low to moderate income workers. During the last four tax seasons, volunteers for this Program have helped taxpayers obtain more than $11.6 Million in refunds, including over $4.6 Million in EITC benefits and over $1.3 Million in Child Tax Credits, and have saved taxpayers almost $1 Million in tax preparation fees. Every year, many families miss out on claiming the valuable tax credits that they are entitled to simply because they do not file their tax returns or fail to prepare their returns correctly. Nationally, it has been estimated that approximately 20 to 25 percent of families who qualify for the EITC fail to claim it. For Hawaii, this means that eligible taxpayers are failing to claim anywhere between $31 Million and $45 Million – every year. Want to volunteer to assist your community?
