The American Red Cross, a humanitarian organization led by volunteers and guided by its congressional charter and the fundamental principles of the International Red Cross movement, will provide relief to victims of disaster and help people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies.
Description:
We are a disaster relief organization providing temporary food, clothing and shelter to victims of natural disasters. We too provide instruction in CPR and First Aid and other health education offerings.
Overall, volunteers are the heart of the American Red Cross. Without them, we would not be able to respond to disasters, teach heath and safety training as well as community disaster education courses where they are needed or assist the members of the military in a timely and effective manner. The American Red Cross works in local communities to meet immediate needs to prevent, prepare for and respond to disasters. Can you lend a hand?
History:
In 1908, the Dallas community faced one of its greatest challenges when the Trinity River swelled, flooding the area. More than 4,000 people were made homeless. A small group of passionate and committed individuals, who later founded the Dallas Area Chapter of the American Red Cross, set to work. The group erected a tent city at Main and Stone streets and hauled hay in wagons to make beds. In one day, Dallas residents contributed $156,000 to aid the victims.
The American Red Cross of North Texas (McKinney Branch) first chartered in 1917 and still going strong - volunteering and serving, recognizing needs and meeting them, helping those who cannot help themselves, and constantly making certain that the "light in the darkness" never goes out.
Almost 100 years later, the Dallas Area Chapter has grown to provide service to 12 counties, and continues the legacy of providing disaster relief assistance and safety education to the North Texas community. That's our promise to you--to be there whenever or wherever we are needed.
