Voluntary Services for the Blind of Fairfield County
| Last updated on January 28, 2013 |
The mission of Voluntary Services for the Blind of Fairfield County is to provide volunteer services to visually impaired residents of Fairfield County, Connecticut in order to improve the quality of their lives.
Description:
Voluntary Services for the Blind of Fairfield County seeks to improve the quality of life of visually impaired neighbors. VSB provides services entirely free of charge through volunteers who work directly with visually impaired clients. All volunteers participate in informal orientation and training by VSB staff, agree to a standard background check, and are carefully matched with a client according to their availability and interests. Services being provided include: friendly visitors, readers, clerical assistants, shoppers, and drivers.
History:
Claudette A. Tallon and James H. Waddington founded Voluntary Services for the Blind of Fairfield County in 1993 with the financial assistance of the Darien Lions Club and some private individuals. It functioned as a project of the Darien Lions Club Foundation from 1993 until 1996 when it became an independent 501(c)(3) corporation. More recently generous donations from several community agencies have enabled VSB to expand its services to more towns. The organization provides visually impaired residents of Fairfield County with volunteers who perform basic services such as visiting, reading, clerical assistance, shopping and driving to assist their clients whose visual impairment does not allow them to do these things independently. An annual Volunteer Recognition event is held to acknowledge the wonderful service contributed by the many caring individuals who give of their time to help visually impaired residents of Fairfield County.
