Creative Learning @ FPC
| Last updated on March 17, 2013 |
By the Church, for the community! At Creative Learning @ FPC, we share God’s grace by providing school aged children (Grades K-5) in our community an active, developmentally appropriate after school experience that will support families by helping to raise responsible, competent, confident individuals who succeed in school and in life. We especially want to help bridge the learning gap for children who have no one at home who can help them with their reading assignments and homework either because of the busy schedules of working parents, educational or language barriers. We work with the schools and child's teachers to provide this support.
Description:
We provide a nutritious snack, structured homework assistance with daily reading time as well as computer access as needed. The time spent with a supportive adult or older student increases the children's sense of worth and confidence. We also spend time together in creative outlets that may include such events as projects in our art room, gardening, drama, and music. We rely upon volunteers to provide guidance for the children, special projects based upon their talents and interests, as well as assistance to our professional staff.
History:
The First Presbyterian Church of Stamford opened this licensed after school program in October 2009. This was a result of years of study regarding the unmet needs in Stamford, followed by work to fulfill zoning and licensing requirements for a day care facility. In the first year we aimed to and served 10 children with homework help and enrichment. Children increased in their reading ability and school success as well as confidence and social skills. This is our second school year, with increased enrollment.
