Vision is to help adults become active, engaged citizens through literacy. Mission-To teach literacy in terms of life, work and citizenship, using volunteers.
Description: We recruit, train and support volunteers to become teachers and/or tutors to adults who desire to learn our language and culture. Volunteers commit to a minimum of two hours per week for a minimum 15 week term (8 weeks in summer).
History: Literacy Volunteers Danbury was started in 1978 as the Danbury Reading Academy. Since then it has grown. Our largest program is adult tutoring in English as a second language. Our students go on to success in higher education, business and professions.
