Keep Blackstone Valley Beautiful
Keep Blackstone Valley Beautiful (KBVB) serves as the environmental education arm of the Blackstone Valley Tourism Council, and is Rhode Island's only affiliate of the national organization Keep America Beautiful. We are focused on preventing litter, reducing waste and beautifying our communities by working with government, business and civic groups in Burrillville, Central Falls, Cumberland, Glocester, Lincoln, North Smithfield, Pawtucket, Smithfield and Woonsocket.
Description:
Keep Blackstone Valley Beautiful (KBVB) implements the values and missions of Keep America Beautiful here in Rhode Island's Blackstone Valley. By utilizing environmental education and preventative measures as well as beautifying our communities, KBVB aims to engage residents, businesses and visitors in making the Valley a cleaner, more beautiful place to live, work and visit. Our projects include monthly electronics recycling drives, ongoing cell phone recycling programs, cleanups and beautification events. Our busiest time is Keep America Beautiful's Great American Cleanup, the nation's largest volunteer-based community improvement program. Projects occur throughout Rhode Island's Blackstone Valley for this during March 1 to May 31.
To date, KBVB has mobilized over 3,000 volunteers that have removed 125,500 pounds of trash, 124,400 pounds of electronics and 7,836 tires from the Blackstone Valley, restored or built ten playgrounds, planted over 1,000 flowers and 700 trees and cleaned over 225 miles of roads, trails, and river and shoreline.
History:
Recognizing that education was the key to preventing environmental problems such as litter, the Blackstone Valley Tourism Council began to explore a relationship with Keep America Beautiful in 2003. In 2005, the pre-affiliation process began and Keep Blackstone Valley Beautiful was started as a program of the Tourism Council. Working with government, business and civic groups in all nine cities and towns in Rhode Island's Blackstone Valley, Keep Blackstone Valley Beautiful became Rhode Island's only certified affiliate of Keep America Beautiful on September 11, 2008.
