Volunteer Income Tax Preparers Needed

RSS XML FeedBackground Active Dec 12, 2008 to Apr 15, 2009

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance or VITA program administered by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). What:  We need volunteers to learn tax preparation online and become IRS certified. This online training ranges from 40-70 hours depending on how advanced the volunteer would like to become. The IRS is shifting to electronic filing, so computer literacy is essential. The training can be completed at convenient times for a volunteer with internet access.

It is accessible from the IRS website. It includes testing for IRS certification.

How long: From now until mid-January or early February for online training.

From mid-January or early February until April 15 to assist filers with tax preparation. Then you are done! Assume a range of 8-15 hours per week for training depending on how much you would like beyond the basics. Certain individuals may also be selected for a one-time in person training with the IRS. During tax season volunteers can set weekly schedules ranging from two hours a couple of nights per week, to Saturday mornings, to a weekday morning or afternoon, or other times which work for both volunteers and filers.
