The Oakland Landscape Committee is a community-based Landscape Committee in Oakland that focuses on school gardens, public gardens, park development and maintenance, vegetation management, tree planting, youth development, and emergency preparedness education.

Description:
The Oakland Landscape Committee assists with the maintenance of the Firestorm Memorial Garden, the Gateway Garden, the Broadway Garden, Morcom Rose Garden, Gateway Emergency Preparedness Center, Temescal Creek, and the Frank Ogawa Firescape Garden. We also work on school gardens with a number of schools that are a part of the Oakland Unified School District, and have provided advice ad support to school groups on developing school gardens. We are a local affiliate of California ReLeaf, the statewide grassroots tree planting network.

History:
The Oakland Landscape Committee (formerly North Hills Landscape Committee) began in approximately 1979 as a community based landscape Committee in the Hiller Highlands community of Oakland. We helped develop the Firestorm Memorial Garden after the Oakland Hills Firestorm in 1991, working with a coalition of public and private partners. We also assisted the City of Oakland and a coalition of public and private partners in developing the Gateway Garden and the Gateway Emergency Preparedness Exhibit Center, which serve a regional audience and educate local residents about fire and earthquake dangers and emergency preparedness. We have helped develop school gardens at a number of Oakland public schools, most recently assisting at Brookfield Elementary, Burckhalter Elementary, the Henry J Kaiser Elementary School, Castlemont High School, the East Oakland School of the Arts, and Lakeview Elementary School. We also helped develop the Frank Ogawa Firescape Garden at the entry to the City of Oakland's North Oakland Sports Field.
