AFS-USA works toward a more just and peaceful world by providing international and intercultural learning experiences to individuals, families, schools, and communities through a global volunteer partnership.

Description:
AFS-USA, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, is a leader in intercultural learning and offers international exchange programs in more than 40 countries around the world through independent, nonprofit AFS Organizations, each with a network of volunteers, a professionally staffed office, and headed up by a volunteer board.

Extending from Napa and Sonoma counties in the north, to San Jose and Los Gatos in the south, as well as San Francisco and the greater East Bay, the AFS San Francisco Bay Area team covers a a wide territory. Local chapters in San Francisco, the Peninsula and the East Bay enable volunteers to focus their energies in their own communities if they choose, while being integral parts of the larger Bay Area Team.

History:
We’ve been exchanging students throughout the world for 60 years. That’s six decades of history and experience in international education with an exemplary record of safety, security, and service to students, parents, and educators.

Currently the San Francisco Bay Area Team includes:
Over 100 Registered Volunteers
24 Students hosted in the San Francisco Bay Area for 2011
43 San Francisco Bay Students sent abroad for a year, semester or summer programs in 2011

Directions:

AFS in the Bay Area works on a volunteer network, meaning there is no centralized office. Volunteers work most often from home and sometimes meet in each others homes or at community centers.
