Open Arms Respite Group, a respite care ministry of Peace Lutheran Church in College Station, is offering training sessions for volunteers on Sept. 23.

The group provides a free, volunteer-run, safe and fun place for people suffering from mild Alzheimer's or dementia to stay while their regular caregivers run errands or take some time for themselves.

Loving volunteers are needed to assist participants with activities, light exercise, dance, singing, games, a devotional and lunch.

Other volunteer roles include contacting agencies and businesses to secure food donations, serving food, obtaining donations to purchase items for activities or giving presentations. Leadership roles are also available.

An open interest session will be held from 3-4 p.m. Sept. 19 at Peace Lutheran Church, 2201 Rio Grande Blvd. in College Station, to provide more information about this project. Official volunteer training will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 23.

To register for the training, call Amie at 764-4090 or Carolyn at 595-2800, ext. 2026.

The respite care program will begin Oct. 14 and will be open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month at Peace Lutheran Church.

Those who need respite care services can call the church, at 693-4403, to register.
