Agency - Moss Mansion Historic House Museum

Agency Details:

Moss Mansion Historic House Museum
Last updated on August 5, 2015

The mission of the Billings Preservation Society, symbolized by the Moss Mansion, is to inspire, to educate, and to facilitate historic and cultural preservation activities for our community and for its future generations.

The Billings Preservation Society provides leadership to inspire ongoing universal appreciation of the value and importance of historic and cultural preservation.

The Moss Mansion was completed in 1903 and was the family residence for the Preston Boyd Moss family for 81 years. The home became an historic house museum shortly after the last family member passed away in 1984.

The house was well preserved by the family with very few alterations. For this reason, the home is filled with most of the original contents and design features: interior curtains, wall coverings, furniture, light fixtures, carpets and color. The originality of the artifacts makes the Moss Mansion a unique community treasure.

The house and gardens are situated on a city block located near downtown Billings with Division street, Clark street and Yellowstone street surrounding it. The home is operated on the revenues from our guided tours, special events memberships, grants and gift shop sales (Mattie's at the Moss). Our volunteers are most likely to participate in helping generate this revenue.

For more information about the Moss Mansion and volunteer opportunities, please contact the staff at 406-256-5100.

The Billings Preservation Society bought the Moss Mansion for $450,000.00 in 1986 and gave the property to the City of Billings and State of Montana. We apply for grants and generate revenue through tours, special events, and our gift shop - Mattie's at the Moss to pay for the operation, maintenance and restoration of the mansion.
