The mission of Montana Audubon is to promote the appreciation, knowledge, and conservation of native birds, other wildlife, and their habitats.

At the Montana Audubon Center (MAC), we focus on connecting people with nature through hands-on education experiences and land restoration. The MAC serves to preserve and enrich wildlife habitat, and provide important open space and public outdoor recreational opportunities within the rapidly expanding Billings’ area. Educational programs at the MAC include school field trips for students K – university level, summer and school break day camps, afterschool programs, high school/college internships, and family weekend activities. Restoration of the land is on-going, and is coordinated by the Yellowstone River Parks Association.

The Montana Audubon Center is a grassroots project located on 27 acres of land along the Yellowstone River in Billings, MT. This site is a former gravel mine, which has been transformed by volunteers into habitat for wildlife and a year-round education facility. For the past five years, Montana Audubon and the Yellowstone River Parks Association, with notable support from the Yellowstone Valley Audubon Society, have expanded education programs and developed the MAC infrastructure with interpretive signs, memorial benches, over a mile of hiking trails, and the ongoing restoration of the land. In October of 2009, The Norm Schoenthal Field Lab officially opened and is now used for classes, lectures, meetings, and other programs. It is a critical addition to the rapidly developing MAC education programs that reach over 2,000 people each year, and the restoration program that has planted over 30,000 native trees and shrubs on the site.
