Stick up for an abused child. Become a Guardian ad litem.

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on August 18, 2014

Our Guardian ad Litem Program (also known as CASA) is committed to the protection and healing of abused or neglected children who have been referred to us by the courts. The GAL program trains and appoints a volunteer (called a Guardian ad Litem) to each child. The volunteer’s job is to visit the child regularly, research the child's needs, then prepare recommendations for the child and present them to the court.

Each Guardian is paired with a mentor from Family Advocates' staff and represented by an attorney in the courtroom.

Over the years our dedicated volunteers have been heroes to hundreds of children in dozens of ways: by advocating for needed medical treatment, by securing extra help at school, by coaching struggling parents, and by telling judges what children would say if they were big enough, or brave enough to tell him themselves.

The need for Guardians is especially high in Canyon County where the number of abused and neglected children has risen dramatically in the last 6 months.

Training to become a Guardian takes about 30 hours and new classes begin monthly. A comprehensive background check including child abuse central registry, sex offender registry, and FBI NCIC national database will be completed for each applicant.
