The mission of the SafeHouse Center is to end battering in Washtenaw County. We provide direct services to survivors and their children and we strive to reduce violence through community education, prevention, training and social change. Direct services to survivors include: emergency shelter, 24 hour crisis line, counseling, on-call first response teams, children's programs & legal advocacy. All direct service positions require the 40-hour training.

History:
The Domestic Violence Project was established in April of 1975, as the NOW Wife Assault Task Force, with the purpose of reducing the incidence of domestic violence within southeast Michigan. SAFE House, the shelter facility for battered women and children, opened its doors in March of 1978. In 1995, the Domestic Violence Project moved into a brand new, beautiful building paid for by the taxpayers of Washtenaw County. The Domestic Violence project now provides a variety of services to survivors of domestic violence. The Project also interacts with many different institutions within our county, including the criminal justice system, schools, churches, and hospitals, in an effort to advocate for survivors and educate the community about dating and domestic violence. In 2005 our name was changed to SafeHouse Center to reflect the wide range of non residential services available to survivors.
