The St. Vincent and Sarah Fisher Center, founded by the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul.
Our Missions Statement: OUR MISSION IS TO PROVIDE EDUCATION AND SKILL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR AT RISK CHILDREN AND FAMILIES. We offer services to the community through basic skill-building and academic enhancement for at-risk children and adults. These programs are designed to help build self-sufficiency skills for academic and employment success, personal achievement and dignity. Our programs are designed to break through the barriers to education that many residents in our area face.
Description:
The Education Experience at The St. Vincent and Sarah Fisher provides a pre-GED tutoring program that prepares adults to achieve a state approved General Equivalency Degree. We have classes three days a week in the morning and afternoon, and one evening class on Thursday evening. We provide a Children's Program designed to enhance basic math and reading skills for Primary School Children. These classes meet four days a week from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. We also offer a Summer Learning Program for the children during the summer months.
History:
In 1851, the Daughters of Charity opened the St. Vincent Orphanage. In 1929 the Sarah Fisher Home for children was built in Farmington Hills for infants and toddlers who were orphaned. In 1948, St. Vincents merged with the Sarah Fisher Home providing residential care for children ages 2 weeks to 16 years of age. Today, the Center continues the Daughters of Charity's tradition of service and dedication to those in need by providing a comprehensive community-based program that engages parents, families, and neighborhoods in the process of creating strong healthy children. It was determined that rather than close the doors of the organization, to return to its roots – providing assistance to the residents of the community through educational programs. At the end of 2006, St. Vincent and Sarah Fisher Center moved to Detroit and continues its services of helping both children and adults through education.
