Job Summary: The laboratory volunteer works under the direct supervision of the Director of Laboratory and the Director of Marketing & Volunteer Services. He/she provides a comforting environment for patients and visitors using their ability to be friendly, caring, and responsive to each person who is encountered. The laboratory volunteer works closely with laboratory staff. Duties of the laboratory volunteer include but are not limited to assisting customers of Memorial Medical Center by helping them get to the laboratory; prepare patients for lab tests and works with lab aides to enhance the patient experience; provide wheelchairs to those who need assistance or have difficulty walking; offer greetings of welcome to all customers and assist them however needed; assist in stocking medical supplies in the lab's storage room; and assist patients and guests in the laboratory waiting area. The laboratory volunteer shall have knowledge of and shall comply with Memorial Medical Center’s customer service standards and shall agree to utilize the customer service behaviors for all MMC customers regardless of age, race, creed, ethnic background, economic status or health status.

Minimum Experience Requirement: Strong interpersonal skills; ability to communicate well verbally; analytical skills necessary to gather and interpret routine information, ability to maintain simple records; ability to organize work according to priority of requests; ability to work with minimum supervision and exercise independent judgment when situations present themselves outside of standard guidelines.

Physical Requirement & Working Conditions: Must be able to tolerate working conditions and be physically able to perform functions of the job.

  1. Normal hours: 4.0 hour shift per week or as scheduled by the laboratory supervisor.
  2. Meal periods and breaks are to be coordinated with other volunteers and laboratory staff to maintain adequate staffing for continuity of care. Food and beverage are not allowed in the laboratory. Volunteers should take food and beverage breaks in the cafeteria or at the drinking fountain.
  3. Subject to frequent changes in priorities throughout the shift. Walking, standing, lifting and pushing objects up to 250 lbs. the majority of work time.

  4. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  5. Customer Service. Provides courteous, informative and helpful service, always placing the needs of the patients and families first. Keeps customers as the focus of your efforts. Works to exceed customer expectations. Follows all MMC customer service and service recovery standards. Follows HIPAA and MMC confidentiality requirements at all times.

  6. Maintain patient confidentiality. Always maintains confidentiality of patient information; does not discuss patient names and information outside of parameters necessary for job; respects patient privacy by speaking about patients only to appropriate MMC staff involved in patient’s care; transports patients via least public pathway; ensures patient privacy while transporting by ensuring patient is well-covered and comfortable; does not inquire as to diagnosis or facts of a case; and never reads a patient’s chart.

  7. Other duties as assigned. Assists in other support functions when needed/asked; may assist admitting, emergency, ambulatory surgery or other departments with requests as given; including but not limited to, wheelchair rounding, making copies, courier of documents, errands, etc.

  8. Specific Duties of Volunteer Position. Duties of the laboratory volunteer include but are not limited to assisting customers of Memorial Medical Center by helping them get to the laboratory; prepare patients for lab tests and works with lab aides to enhance the patient experience; provide wheelchairs to those who need assistance or have difficulty walking; offer greetings of welcome to all customers and assist them however needed; assist in stocking medical supplies in the lab's storage room; and assist patients and guests in the laboratory waiting area. Volunteers shall not provide clinical care or advice to patients and/or family members. In case of complaint say, “I will be happy to contact the appropriate person for you.” Volunteers should not lift patients or provide weight bearing support for patients.

  9. Dress Code. All Memorial Medical Center volunteers must abide by the Personal Appearance and Dress Code. The uniform for MMC volunteers shall consist of a hospital supplied volunteer services royal blue vest or smock; white/khaki/cream or tan slacks; white/khaki/cream or tan shirt under smock or vest; no skid comfortable soled, closed heal and closed toe shoes; a hospital supplied name badge worn at chest or neck level. Volunteers must keep their uniforms laundered and ironed to portray a professional image.
  10. Hospital-wide orientation and additional departmental training. TB test is mandatory for all volunteers. Must pass criminal background check. This position requires someone who likes working with people and someone who can get around easily; a lot of walking and standing.
