Red Wing Youth Outreach Program
| Last updated on January 26, 2012 |
The mission of Red Wing Youth Outreach Program is to provide intervention, life skills education and mentoring for adolescents at risk of facing serious challenges in their transition to a healthy adulthood.
Description:
Red Wing Youth Outreach Program (RWYOP) youth workers have a tremendously positive impact on the children they work with. We have programs in all of Red Wing's public schools, from 6th to 12th grade and the Alternative High School, helping us reach more at-risk students. Our programming includes, one on one and group meetings and activities, after school homework help and socializing, community service projects, young moms groups and special activities. RWYOP youth workers have become the first line of defense in observing serious social and health issues for at-risk youth, frequently referring students to professionals for issues such as depression, anxiety and eating disorders. RWYOP also works to connect kids and families to healthy activities offered throughout Red Wing and the surrounding community.
History:
Red Wing Youth Outreach Program was established in 1992 after three years of work by the Red Wing Community Advisory Team, a coalition designed to address chemical abuse problems among area youth. The advisory team, comprised of school, business and civic leaders, determined that chemical abuse problems persisted in Red Wing because the underlying causes that contribute to them, such as broken families and disengaged parents, also persisted. Successful youth worker programs were researched and a program was developed for Red Wing. Red Wing Public Schools, the City of Red Wing and a Minnesota Department of Education grant provided funding for our initial youth worker, while the YMCA provided office space and supervision. In 1997 the RWYOP Board of Directors hired a second youth worker and in 2003 incorporated the organization as a nonprofit. Since then we have been on a steady growth path, adding summer programming and in 2007 hiring a third youth worker and a part time development coordinator.
