Lawrence Humane Society
| Last updated on December 31, 2012 |
The humane society acts as advocates for all animals. We believe in the value of humane attitudes toward all living creatures. We shelter stray, orphaned and unwanted animals in our community. We strive to place all animals in responsible permanent homes. We work to reduce births of unwanted pets, to eliminate cruelty and neglect and to promote kindness toward all animals. We educate our community and assist in the enactment and enforcement of laws relating to humane care of animals.
Description:
We humanely shelter approximately 4,000 dogs, cats, and other small animals each year. Our friendly and knowledgeable staff and volunteers work with adopters to match them with an animal that suits their lifestyle. Lost and Found Programs help reunite owners and their pets. We offer pet identity tags and microchips to reduce the number of unidentified lost pets. We shelter stray animals for the City of Lawrence and Douglas County.
History:
The Humane Society as we know it today was chartered on March 26, 1951. In memory of their son, Charles Ise, Dr and Mrs John Ise donated $35,000 for the construction of the original shelter. Since then, the Lawrence Humane Society has grown and expanded to house homeless pets and stray animals and provide better and better care for the animals in the facility.
