| Last updated on May 9, 2012 |
It is our mission to inspire and enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens.
Description:
For 40 years, Boys & Girls Club of Brazoria County (BGCBC) has been in the forefront of youth development, working with young people from disadvantaged economic, social and family circumstances. BGCBC serves over 5,000 youth annually, ages 6 to 18, providing what they need and want most: adults who respect and listen to them; a safe environment where they can have fun and be themselves; and interesting, constructive activities that channel youthful energy into challenging pursuits.
Boys & Girls Club of Brazoria County is facility-based, has 15 unique sites, and offers daily access to a broad range of programs that promote the health, social, educational, vocational, character and leadership development of girls and boys served. Club programs foster a sense of belonging, competence, usefulness and influence that builds self-confidence and self-esteem. All programs concentrate on the five core program areas of education and career development; character and leadership development; health and life skills; the arts; and sports, fitness and recreation.
History:
In 1972 a group of community leaders saw the need for a safe, healthy and well-rounded place for children to go after school and during the summers in Brazoria County. The Boys Club, as it was then called, was subsequently founded in Brazoria County on March 14, 1972, and opened its doors in a building donated by the Union of Operating Engineers. Today Boys & Girls Club of Brazoria County (BGCBC) serves 5,000+ young people, ages 6 to 18, across the county. Membership has increased significantly and our programs have expanded over the past four decades, yet BGCBC remains at the forefront of youth development, working with people from disadvantaged economic, social and family circumstances. We offer young people a tangible measure of hope through educational, recreational and community-based programs. BGCBC focuses on delivering a diversified program of activities that stress character and leadership skills, education and career development, health and life skills, the arts and sports, fitness and recreation – all for a minimal annual membership fee.
