Nominations Sought for Leading Lights Volunteer Awards

The Leading Lights committee is accepting nominations for the seventh annual volunteer awards until February 23, 2015. Nominations are encouraged from across the New River Valley. Leading Lights recognizes volunteers in the NRV who make community-changing impacts and serve as models to inspire others.  The coalition honors award-winners by donating $1,000 to the non-profit of their choice.

2014's forty-two volunteer nominees were engaged in diverse volunteer activities across the New River Valley. Collectively nominees spent thousands of hours over their lifetimes volunteering with clothing banks, rescue teams, as youth mentors, managing holiday programs, overseeing weekend 'food backpack' programs, helping at local food kitchens, serving with civic groups, community building, and literally more than a hundred other noble local charitable activities and programs. While the amount of time spent volunteering is significant, Leading Lights is focused on the impact of a volunteer's work and leadership Individuals and organizations are highly encouraged to submit nominations for outstanding New River Valley volunteers they know. Nominations are also highly sought for high school and college volunteers.

The five awards are given in three categories: community (three), high school (one), and college (one). Nominees must be current residents of or currently enrolled in schools in the New River Valley. The award selection committee includes representation from across the New River Valley.  Award winners will be selected     on the following criteria:

♦Strong community involvement

♦ Demonstrated lifestyle of dedicated, continuous, long-term involvement to the community

♦ Proven leadership

♦ Creativity in initiating and implementing projects that lead to a better quality of life

The nomination form is online at www.leadinglightsnrv.org; nominations are only accepted online. Persons who have been nominated before, but not selected as one of the five awardees may be nominated again. No couple or group nominations will be accepted. The United Way of Montgomery, Radford & Floyd office can be contacted for more information at (540) 381-2066.

The deadline for nominations to be received is midnight, Monday, February 23, 2015. The 2015 annual Leading Lights banquet will be April 9, 2015. The annual sponsored awards gala will be held at the German Club Manor adjacent to the Virginia Tech campus.  Seating will be limited.

Sponsored by United Way of Montgomery, Radford & Floyd.
