Ytoss Recycling Event

Ytoss is a program of the YMCA at Virginia Tech conducted each May during Virginia Tech's move-out. The purpose is to collect gently used items that students no longer want to keep them out of local landfills. Collected items are sold during campus move-in each August, going back to students that are looking for low cost alternatives to furnish their homes and apartments. Here are three compelling reasons to volunteer for Ytoss!

  • It's easy! Spend two hours outside, meet students and parents, and share the excitement that accompanies the end of another academic year. We'll have 9 collection points on campus, and two off-campus May 9th - 18th.
  • It's green! Ytoss Collection diverts nearly 12,000 pounds of waste from the landfill each year, contributing to Virginia Tech's Silver Sustainability ranking. Instead of being "dumped," these items are sold or sent to textiles, electronics, or metals recycling.
  • It supports service-learning! The Ytoss Sale in August is one of the major funding sources for the YMCA Student Programs - which give back to the local community throughout the year and allow students a unique, real-world leadership experience.

Volunteers will be needed at nine on-campus Collection Points from Friday, May 9 - Thursday, May 15th. Additional volunteers will be needed to help collect items off-campus and sort collected items beginning Saturday, May 17th. As volunteers working Collection Points, there will be some cleaning of small appliances and a high level of customer service and interaction with student donors. Volunteers working at the sorting location will sort and test electronic items prior to items being stored for the summer. There is sometimes light to heavy lifting of items at this event (although there is assistance from other volunteers for heavier items). Volunteers will receive snacks and water during their shift, as well as either a free t-shirt or a re-usable water bottle on a first-come, first-served basis.
