Eastside Legal Assistance Program (ELAP)provides free civil legal services, primarily through volunteer attorneys, to low income residents of East and Northeast King County and domestic violence legal aid throughout King County.

Description:
ELAP provides civil legal services (i.e. anything that is NOT a criminal matter) through a variety of projects, including 9 advice/consultation clinics (free 1/2 hour consultation), the Wills Project (free wills, physician's directive, durable power of attorney), Self-Help Dissolution Workshops (assists those representing themselves in a dissolution), Domestic Violence Legal Project (DVLP) (provides free emergency assistance to abuse victims anywhere in King County), educational lectures, Client Plus and full representation. Most of our services are provided at other sites and we use primarily volunteer attorneys to provide services, as well as volunteers to oversee advice clinics.

History:
ELAP was incorporated as a non-profit in 1989. Since that time it has continuously expanded its services to low income residents needing civil legal assistance. Over 3,000 people contact ELAP each year for assistance. ELAP's volunteer attorneys provide over $400,000 worth of donated services each year. The agency is funded by the Eastside cities of Bellevue, Kirkland, Redmond, Mercer Island, Issaquah and Sammamish; the Legal Foundation of Washington; King County; special events and through private donations.
