One-on-one mentor for a student in 7th-12th grade Education 10K U of I dome Reader, Tutor, Mentor

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on January 4, 2012

“It’s an eye opener how much a child looks forward to seeing me each week for only one hour. I think I’m making a difference in my mentee’s life.” - Elaine T., Mentor to a student at South East Junior High.

Mentors are matched one-on-one with students who desire additional support from a caring adult. Matches meet once a week, usually at the student's school, to do a variety of activities together. Both mentors and students are asked for a 12 month commitment prior to entering the program. Each match has a site coordinator who oversees how the match is going and offers support with ideas, activities, school involvement, etc.

Volunteers are required to do an application and interview, pass background checks, and attend an initial mentor training prior to being matched with a student.

This is my second year as an AMP volunteer. It is a rewarding way to volunteer with a student who needs academic and social support. This is a wonderful volunteer opportunity for a college student, a person with a flexible schedule, or retired individuals.

BB/BS of Johnson County did a great job matching my mentee and me. UAy provides caseworker support and lets me know pressures the student has outside of school. The ICSD provides great space and resources for the program participants. This program allows me to stay in touch with young people one child at a time.
