Agency - HomeSharing, Inc. - NJ - Bridgewater

Agency Details:

HomeSharing, Inc. - NJ - Bridgewater
Last updated on March 25, 2013

HomeSharing prevents homelessness in Somerset and Hunterdon counties through our HomeSharing program. HomeSharing is unique. It is the only agency in New Jersey that prevents homelessness full-time through the homesharing model. HomeSharing's mission is to prevent homelessness through shared affordable housing. We accomplish this by matching "providers," residents who need to share their homes or apartments in order to continue to live in them, with "seekers," individuals searching for affordable housing in the community. These relationships foster independence with dignity.

Description:
HomeSharing is uniques. It is the only agency in New Jersey that prevents homelessness full-time through the homesharing model. HomeSharing also holds a Holiday Basket Program providing participants in our program with all the food and necessities for a complete Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter dinner. At Christmas "Wish list gifts" are distributed and at Easter special baskets for the children are distributed.Items are donated by volunteers, corporations and organizations. We also hold an annual Volunteer Awards Reception honoring our many volunteers. An annual summer barbecue picnic is held to give our participants a day of entertainment that they may not be able to provide for themselves on an already stretched budget.

History:
Our agency was founded in 1984 and has been in existence for 22 years. HomeSharing was developed as an alternative model for addressing the needs of affordable housing and as a preventive safety net for individuals in danger of becoming homeless. Though the "shared housing" model had been in existence prior to HomeSharing's founding, the existing models were designed for "senior-with-seniior" placement. This model was expanded to address one of Somerset Counties most pressing issues, affordable housing for the wowrking poor and those whose incomes are at or below the povery level. HomeSharing has been a safety net in Somerset and now Hunterdon County providing a dignified and proactive answer to addressing housing issues for those at risk of becoming homeless.
