Agency Details:
Portland Mentoring Alliance
The vision of the Portland Mentoring Alliance is to improve the life qualities of both young people and adults as they experience the multiple values of a one-to-one relationship.
Description:
Volunteer employees from businesses throughout Greater Portland are matched with Portland High School students to create supportive mentoring relationships. Mentors share their skills, experiences, talents and wisdom with students looking for college, career, and personal guidance. They help enrich the lives of their mentees in many ways-through challenge and encouragement. Mentors are individuals willing to build a meaningful relationship with a high school student in hopes of making a positive impact. Interested individuals fill out an application and are introduced to expectations and responsibilities. Matches are made based on the student's academic and career goals. Training is designed around the needs and interests of the mentor and mentee. A network of support staff and peer mentors are available on a weekly basis. We ask one year commitment, seeing the student at least one hour a week during the school year.
History:
The Portland Mentoring Alliance was established in 1992 and has matched over 1000 students with mentors during the past eighteen years. The founding partners are Portland High School, Maine Medical Center, UNUM, Berry Dunn McNeil & Parker, the Portland Education Partnership, and the City of Portland. Our newest Partners: The George Mitchell Institute and Wright Express. These Corporations are all members of the Portland Mentoring Alliance Board of Directors.
