| Last updated on July 17, 2012 |
Our mission is to save lives by preventing lung disease and promoting lung health
Description:
As America's oldest voluntary health organization, founded in 1904, we began our fight dedicated to combating tuberculosis, the most dreaded disease at the time. As TB was brought under control, the focus expanded to all lung diseases including asthma, tobacco control and environmental health issues. Today, the focus is on healthy lungs and healthy air. The American Lung Association has led the fight for healthy air for more than 40 years, advocating for stronger clean air standards, lower power plant emissions, and cleaner vehicles and fuels. We are committed to helping people quit smoking, the most preventable cause of death in the US, and to prevent young people from starting in the first place.
History:
Christmas Seals were first issued by the Lung Association in 1907 to combat tuberculosis. Today, seals help the Lung Association fight new battles against asthma, lung cancer, influenza, tobacco use, air pollution and more
