The mission of Literacy Volunteers of Greater Hartford (LVGH) is to improve the ability of adults to read, write, and speak English.
Description:
LVGH recruits, trains, and supports volunteers to provide English literacy instruction to over 650 low literate adults adults per year. We offer small group classes in Basic Literacy and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) at our our Hartford Literacy Center, ESOL instruction at our Wickham Library Center in East Hartford, and Basic Literacy at the Prosser Public Library - Wintonbury Branch in Bloomfield. LVGH also offers Computer Literacy, Citizenship, Writing, Math Literacy, Pre-GED, GED and Health Literacy.
History:
LVGH was established in 1972, and is an accredited affiliate of ProLiteracy America, an organization formed by the merger of Literacy Volunteers of America and Laubach Literacy. We currently serve 650 -700 adults each year. Approximately 2/3 of our students participate in ESOL instruction and 1/3 in basic literacy programming. We have 160 active tutors.
