Literacy Council of Reading-Berks
| Last updated on January 10, 2012 |
The Literacy Council of Reading-Berks is a volunteer, non-profit organization that teaches reading, writing, oral and auditory English skills, and their applications in daily living, to the English and non-English speaking adult population of Berks County, through one-on-one tutoring and various classes.
Description:
Our goal at the Literacy Council is to help people reach their goals as parents, workers and members of the community. We do this by providing free services to hundreds of clients each year. Our volunteers are trained to meet one-on-one with a student in order to work on specific needs. We also hold the following classes: conversation classes for our English-as-a-second-language learners; pre-GED classes to provide students basic math, reading and life skills in preparation of the GED; and, citizenship preparation classes to prepare permanent residents for the naturalization process. Our main facility in West Lawn houses our computer lab where students and tutors can learn together or independently. We serve people across the county and city, and ALWAYS NEED YOUR HELP!
History:
Organized by a group of 13 women in 1968, the Literacy Council has grown to an agency of hundreds of volunteers across Berks County. We have helped thousands of adults toward reaching their literacy goals. We have been a member agency of the United Way of Berks County since 1985. Besides our main office in West Lawn, we have morning classes in downtown Reading, and our tutors meet with students at locations across the county.

Overall Experience

I was a student
 |
By saying how thankful I am of how the Literacy Council of Reading has helped me and what I have accomplished, it would make anyone decide to help and to make a difference in someone's life. I came from The Dominican Republic with just a basic knowledge of the English language. I remembered being afraid to talk because I did not want to mispronounce a word, nor for people to laugh at me. The support that I received from the wonderful tutors that I worked with is undescribible. I can tell you that I remember every single name of each of them(this was back in 1995)just to let you know how they really impacted my life. I am completing my College degree and this is with the help and foundation that I received from all the tutors. Maybe is not late yet to thank you for all of your great efforts. posted on September 15, 2004 |
