Global Youth Service Day is an annual campaign that celebrates and mobilizes the millions of children and youth who improve their communities each day of the year through service and service-learning. Established in 1988, Global Youth Service Day is the largest service event in the world, and the only day of service dedicated to children and youth. GYSD is celebrated each year in over 100 countries.
Here in Coastal Mississippi, we have chosen to focus this Day of Service on the Oil Spill Disaster. Our service projects will include a Beach Clean-up, a canned food drive to assist food banks that have seen an increase in usage since the Oil Spill Disaster and a project that will benefit the Lynn Meadows Discovery Center. The Lynn Meadows Discovery Center provided recreation and an opportunity for children who were affected by the Oil Spill Disaster a chance to play during the crisis.
We will also have Service Learning Stations that will give middle school children the chance to learn about the oil spill through Environmental Education activities.
This event will take place on April 16th, 2011 at the Lynn Meadows Discovery Center from 8am to 1pm.
We are encouraging volunteers in the 4th through 8th grades to volunteer on this day.
Chik-Fil-A will be on site vending food, the Red Cross will have a First Aid Tent to assist with safety and the Gulfport Police Department will be providing a safe crossing for volunteers to the beach for the clean up.
