We assist ANYONE in NEED by providing a variety of services made possible through donations to our organization.
WHAT WE DO:
St. Vinnys Bistro at Haven for Hope -
We have been feeding the homeless since 1985 at our previous Dining Room at the old SAMMs Shelter. There we served more than 5 million meals. We now serve at our St. Vinnys Bistro at Haven for Hope inside Prospects Courtyard. There we serve more than 700 meals daily to the homeless of San Antonio and it will soon increase to 1,200 meals per day. We are one of the 9 Pillars of Hope on campus. We collaborate with partners and other street feeders like Mobile Loaves and Fishes, Mission Sandwich, Meating the Need, San Antonio Food Bank and many more.
Operation Food Pantry -
In 2009, the SVDP helped approximately 1,019,325 people and expended a total value of $9,741,460 in program services, in-kind goods; time and mileage on behalf of our clients. Persons who need food are assisted by the SVDP Conference food pantry in the area where they live. Emergency food assistance is provided at no cost to the recipients. We have more than 2,100 volunteers who operate our 74 pantries throughout San Antonio and 16 surrounding counties.
Thrift Store -
Our store is located at 1103 S. Frio. We operate only from donations. There are 3 functions of the store. The revenue collected from sales goes back to our pantries throughout the city and helps sustain our Council Office. We help anyone that might be in need of clothing, furniture, household items, etc. We will pick up donations or you may drop them off.
Client Financial Assistance Program -
The SVDP-AC has a small client financial assistance program. This program assists clients who find themselves in financial difficulty. Limited financial assistance is provided for things such as rent, mortgage, utilities, funerals, and medication. The funds for this program are usually donated and designated for the purpose of client financial assistance.
Project Cool -
The SVDP-AC and the SVDP Conferences became partners with Catholic Charities, City of San Antonio Community Initiatives, Fire and Health Departments, United Way, City Public Service, CPS Energy, and many others. This program helps provide over 11,000 fans for disadvantaged elderly living in Bexar County. The SVDP-AC picks up donated fans and then distributes from the SVDP Warehouse to the SVDP Conferences and other agencies who then distribute them directly to the elderly.
Disaster Services -
We are the second responders when it comes to disasters. Just recently when Hurricane Alex hit the Gulf, we provided help in Del Rio in August 2010. We assisted with food, appliances, and clothing.
Our mission is an organization of lay persons who seek to help those who are most in need in the spirit of justice and charity, by person-to-person involvement of its members.
We were established in 1871 in San Antonio. In 2009, we saw a 25% increase in the number of units of food distributed over the previous year. The SVDP-ASA is finding it more and more difficult to financially keep up with this increased demand for food assistance. The increased demand meant that SVDP Archdiocesan Council had to cut back funding on some of our other social service programs in order to meet this most basic human need. It also meant that there were times in the last three months of 2009 when we could not provide enough food to the Conferences thus their clients did not receive the same amount of food that they normally would have received or they received nothing at all. The population that we serve is low to middle income.
